 Message from the Chair

Dear friends and colleagues,

On behalf of the organizing committee, we cordially invite you to be Speaker at the upcoming 15th International Symposium in Biomedical Polymers, which will be held from the 22th to the 26th of September, 2025, in Porto, Portugal.  This meeting is the 15th edition of a series of conferences organized by the International Scientific Committee over the past 30 years in different continents, with an interruption due to Covid. This meeting will commemorate our 30th years of organizing this very successful meeting. In addition to honor the founders of the meeting we will have special sessions to honor the recently deceased Prof. Julio San Roman and Prof. Allan Hoffman. Julio was one of the most active members of FBPS and one of our organizers. Allan was one of the most supportive members in the community and an inspiration for many years for all of us working on biomedical polymers.

We will also have specific sessions to promote European Union - Korea collaborations following the recent adhesion of Korea to the EU Horizon framework programs.

This meeting will be, as usually in this series, a great opportunity for discussions of past, present, and future research on bioactive and functional polymers for advanced biomedical applications and tissue engineering.  A very relaxed and cooperating atmosphere, both on science and on the social events, will be implemented. An exciting and looking forward scientific program will cover basic to applied themes, focusing also on advanced post-graduate training and on entrepreneurship opportunities. The meeting will also serve as a forum for students, postdoctoral fellows and established scientists from different countries to exchange ideas, broaden knowledge and develop long lasting collaborations.

We are highly committed to organize a good meeting of great interest to everybody attending it, by means of promoting the close contact between scientists, clinicians and industries interested in the most recent and innovative therapies designed to improve and revolutionise healthcare in all the areas related to biomedical polymers, namely implants, medical devices, tissue engineering, regenerative and precision medicine, controlled drug delivery, among others. We are also very keen on engaging the younger scientists working in the field having them participating actively in the conference.

The conference venue will be the Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda Foundation that was set up in 1964. This Foundation is located at “Avenida da Boavista”, the longest avenue in Porto that is more than 5 km in length and that crosses 6 neighbourhoods! The conference site is near the sea and the mouth of the Douro River and faces the major park of Porto city. The “best fish in the World” restaurants, the unique grill fish places, are not far away!

Porto is one of Europe´s most beautiful and important historical cities. Many tourism awards were received by the city in the last years. From the picturesque streets of downtown Porto historical centre to the churches and monuments, which offer spots of unrivalled beauty, meandering along romantic routes, cruises on the River Douro, laying down at its beaches still within the city limits, visits to the port wine Cellars, the imposing presence of the São Bento train station, the Clérigos Tower, the Stock Exchange Palace, the architecture of Casa da Música (House of Music), the Serralves Contemporary Museum collection, or the Dragão football stadium, there are many reasons why the city of Porto was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO as well as European BEST destination in different years and categories. And of course, you should also enjoy the unique foods and wines (Portugal has more than 300 endogenous grape varieties) and the always recognized Porto people hospitality. Porto inhabitants are one of the most welcoming and friendly people in the World.

We are very honoured to host the 15th FBPS and we sincerely look forward to welcoming you in Porto to enjoy great science, sharing ideas and networking, while experience our hospitality, our cuisine and (of course) our Porto wines (Port and table wines), interacting with the Atlantic Ocean and the Douro River, in a unique environment.

See you all in Porto!
